GPS (Global Positioning System)

What is GPS?

- Global Positioning System
- The system consists of 24 satellites (with about 6 "spares") that
orbit above the Earth’s surface and continuously send signals to
  ground stations
- It can show you your exact position on Earth anytime, anywhere,
  in any weather.

Elements of GPS

Space Segment
- consists of a constellation of 24 satellites
(and about six "spares") that orbit the
  Earth.

User Segment
- consists of receivers, which you can hold in
your hand or mount in a vehicle, like your
   car.

Control Segment
- consists of ground stations (located around the world) that make sure the satellites are working properly.

How GPS Works

Each satellite generates radio signals that allow a receiver to estimate the satellite location and distance between the satellite and the receiver. The receiver uses the measurements to calculate the user’s location on Earth.

A GPS receiver must be locked on to the signal of at least three satellites to calculate a 2D position (latitude and longitude) and track movement. With four or more satellites in view, the receiver can determine the user's 3D position (latitude, longitude and altitude). Once the user's position has been determined, the GPS unit can alculate other information, such as speed, bearing, track, trip distance, distance to destination, and more.
